A few years ago I was gifted an Annie's Knit Club kit that makes a 20 square blanket. Each square is 12 x 12, so it is a large blanket.
I have been working on it for about 3 years. All I have left is one long border - and I ran out of yarn. Since it was a kit, it's not like I can go to Michael's or JoAnn's to buy more. Jim was able to find some on Amazon and hopefully when it gets here it is a match. Unfortunately, it won't come until the 28th.

That's frustrating!
I something similar happen with an Annie's Kit but much longer (20 years) ago. Lucky for me, I realized ahead of time that I was going to be short and got very, very creative about I cut/changed colors. I barely squeaked it out, and the back of the afghan wasn't very pretty, but the front came out okay. The afghan I made was panels in an ecru color, but had stitching that made it appear green vines with purple flowers were "growing" along the ends of the panels/sides of the afghan. It was the purple and green that I ran short of.
Looking back, I think that they probably had someone make a sample swatch, weighed that swatch, and then calculated how much yarn would be required based on weight (and that swatch). That doesn't take into account indivdiual variances (even within gauge).
Glad you were able to find some yarn so you can finish.

And it also doesn't take in to account a few of the white blocks taking me multiple tries.

Yikes! The kit should have allowed more yarn for sure! Hope the stuff you ordered will match and work well with what you already made.
