We have started harvesting squash here and there! Very exciting! Lots of blooms on the squash, tomatoes (lots of green cherry tomatoes, too!), zucchini, cucumber, and cantaloupe. I'm anxious for blooms to turn into fruit, but I'll be patient!

Well I just came in from the garden. I think the peppers and cucumbers are dead. If so I will retill that area and see if the garden centers still have plants. Then replant. The pumpkins are growing, slower now but still doing well. 1 watermelon seems to be dying but the other is robust The cantaloupes still look promising I think I counted 7 tomato babies today between 3 of my 4 plants. The cherry tomatoes are still to young to produce and they are in pots.

We had started a few watermelon vines and finally planted them over the weekend. Looks like the deer already found them and polished them off. I think the raised bed has exactly one green onion and one red onion still alive. That's it. The deer get EVERYTHING, even though we put the raised bed by the house.

Oh MM I am sorry! I know there are deer not far away, on the AFB down the road but I never see them on this side of the fence. Mostly we have birds and cats, though I have not seen so many cats around lately and Opossums. Oh and dogs. Everyone seems to have dogs getting out lately.
So In my garden my tomatoes are getting many babies. Yesterday I picked my pepper. It is NOT a lunch box orange which is what the tag said on the plant I bought but a chili pepper. MY pepper plants are small and I doubt will produce much if anything else but I got 1!

That is one of my concerns here. The deer aren't the least bit put off from walking right into and through our yard. The rabbits are pretty brazen, too, and that's without a garden per se. Our front door and back doors are on the second floor, and I have my plants sitting or hanging from the porches and stairs. I'm going to try an ornamental veggie bed next year... we'll see if it gets eaten up. In TX, I basically put "cages" of bird netting around my raised beds to keep out the neigborhood critters. I used t-posts and hung the netting on that all the way around, where I'd have to open it up to weed. I've wondered if that would keep the deer out.

Now that the plumbers have come and restored my water line, my garden is starting to look like something. I have some healthy tomato plants blossoming now, basil, mint, cilantro, dill, my winter squash leaves are out, as are the beginnings of my parsnips and turnips and beets, the corn looks healthy enough but no ears yet, I just planted beans and sunflowers. All is looking good now that I can water!

Thanks, Sandra. I think we've given up for now. In the eight years we've lived at this house, we have never been able to harvest a single wild blackberry or any kind of garden produce. The rabbits, squirrels, birds, and deer all work together to ensure it. Oh well.

MM- I am so sorry to hear that!!!
Mel- that chili pepper must have been a surprise!
Merrileem- yay for fixed water!
Our garden is humming along. So far it looks like only two of the pepper plants (yellow) are going to produce. The other two are looking pathetic. The tomatoes are looking fairly good, especially the cherry ones. Cucumbers are flowering, cantaloupe is flowering. Zucchini are flowering too, but right now they are all male blossoms. There are some females emerging, but they haven't opened yet. Fingers crossed. Squash continues to do well too.

Jennilee, the bigger surprise was MJ wanting to eat it on his burger last night. He really enjoyed it and is hoping the plants will produce more. So far no flowers on any of them but we will see.

Sandra, supposedly human urine will deter deer. You have four males in the house. Give them the job of urinating along the perimeter of the backyard. Lol
We have been picking peas and tomatoes like crazy. Dh has been too busy to scoop up rabbit manure and hauling it to the garden for me. The okra, peppers and cukes could use it. Picking some okra and a couple of cukes and peppers. Watermelons going crazy out there. Should be picking one or two soon.

They are all pretty modest, I think they'd die. Well, DH would laugh at me. but the boys would be so embarassed. But seriously - in our neighborhood, I'm SURE people would have a fit. It looks isolated from our back porch, but we can all see each other's backyards.

You could have them pee in a bucket and pour it out...

You could have them pee in a bucket and pour it out... It's worth a try in my case, anyway. Although, if the deer don't get the food, the rabbits, coons, and birds and squirrels will. Guess I could go squirrel hunting. . . I put a planter box in the kitchen window and have been putting spring onions and celery bottoms and romain bottoms in it. The celery is already sprouting. I'm hoping by having these inside the house, they will grow and produce a little for us.

My kitchen window box garden is doing very well. I have at least 3 inches of celery growing, several spring onions, and some romaine leaves sprouting! It's not much, but it's so exciting to watch it grow, knowing the deer can't have it!
