So, we heard bad news about my car. It will cost $1700 to fix as it needs a new power steering pump. On my car, this is electrical which evidently must make it super expensive.
As you know, dd1 has been sick for over 6 years now and we're still paying medical bills for her. I have been off work since the shutdown, and probably will not have a job once school starts again, as the school is changing up things due to the covid rules. My car is 7 years old (we got it used) and we still owe some on it. We are required to keep insurance on it because it's not yet paid off. Here's my options:
Let it sit unused while still paying insurance and completely rely on dh's vehicle alone. This is difficult as he needs his car for going to work.
Borrow the money and get it fixed
Use our entire savings (not much) and borrow the rest to get it fixed
What would you do? Right now we have "unplugged" the clothes dryer, the dishwasher, and turned off lights during the day. I've turned up the AC as far as dd1 can handle without getting sick. I'm showering some days and doing a "sponge bath" on days in between. We don't have cable tv or expensive cell phone plans. I'm cooking at home but we have to do that anyway due to all the food allergies. Our home is a modest, 3-bedroom, 1-bath for the 4 of us and the mortgage is cheaper than rent. We love Dave Ramsey and have no credit card debt. It's just that every time we save a little, BAM, something wipes it out like dd1's illness, the flood we had, etc.
Not trying to cry or whine, just trying to brainstorm what to do. I keep looking for news ways to tighten the belt. Any suggestions?
