Our water company is raising rates AGAIN. We're already paying almost $8 a month just for "improvement fees" and now the increased rate will be about $11 extra each month. Looks like that's on top of the $8 we already pay.
I already take short showers and alternate those with sponge baths. We run the washer with full loads. Instead of running the dishwasher, we wash by hand. I re-use water for the houseplants. We already have a water saver shower head and the toilet is the low-flow flush type.
Do you have any tips to add to this? How do you save on your water bill?

One thing I will share is that your dishwasher MAY use less water (but there's always a tradeoff). Our dishwasher uses less water but if we choose that cycle it runs much longer (using more electricity).
Another thing that may be more helpful is to carefully turn off EVERYTHING (spigots, etc) in the house... and then go watch your meter for a bit. If it's moving at all, you have a leak somewhere.
I'm sorry, I can't recall if you have kids/teens. At one point, I bought these special shower timers. It sits in the bottom of the shower, it's green, then yellow, and then by the time it turns red - you need to be out of that shower! That was helpful with our very-long-shower-loving child.
The other things I can think of... you're already doing.

I like the idea of turning off everything and watching the meter. Dd2 got married a month ago, so it's just dh and I and dd1.
The shower timer sounds like a great idea for kids/teens!

We had a plumber check the lines today and he found two very small leaks in our main line to the house. No wonder the bill has been high!

Even though those two leaks are very small that water loss adds up.

We got our bill again. Fixing those tiny leaks saved us $12 this month! Those were leaks the water company did not detect. Looks like that savings will be used to pay the new usage fees they've permanently added to the water will. Glad we got those fixed!
