I have a couple of quick thoughts: - Think out of the box. After years of broken jewelry boxes, I saw an idea where you use a mesh wastebasket and paperclips to hang everything from rings to necklaces to earrings. DH was quizziical when I was setting it up, but it's the tidiest my jewelry has every been.
- It sounds odd, but read those Amazon list "news" articles. Every once in a while, I see an organizational tool I never thought of. I may not (okay, probably won't) buy it, but it gives me ideas of how to get the same effect.
- Think about empty space. Years ago, the mirror that goes over my dresser didn't make it through a move (exactly how to such big things get lost?). ANYWAY, I saw a friend do something with milk crates... So I got several, spray painted them, and DH hung them on a diagonal over the dresser. I used to store yarn and sweaters in them. In this house, they've just sat on top of the dresser, and I've decided I do not like that, so back on the wall is on DH's honey-do list.
- Likewise, we do a moderate (not truly) long term food storage. We took a closet in the basement, put in a freezer and some shelves and buckets around the freezer. Not the original purpose, but it works pretty well.

Great ideas there! One way to stay organized is to keep all like items together, and having a place for those items. Office items stay at the desk. Sewing items are in the sewing room. If you have a specific place for something and always keep it in that place, you always know where to find it.
"Don't put it DOWN, put it AWAY!" When you use something, put it back where you found it as soon as you are finished using it. This really helps me keep the bathroom clear. After using items like curling iron, contact solution, combs, etc. I put them back in their proper areas instead of leaving them on the sink vanity. It only takes a minute to put things back and it keeps them from cluttering up the space.
For my sewing room, I have bins for the fabric. Pink fabric is in one bin, blue in another bin, and so on. Scissors, seam rippers, bobbins, etc. are kept in a drawer under the sewing machine. I have a plastic set of drawers and each drawer is for something specific. One has spools of ribbon, one has needles and pins, another has patterns. I got plastic containers at Jo-Ann fabrics for my thread. The containers are specifically made to slide the spool of thread in over a little plastic stick thing. The lid keeps them all in place and these stack well. They are clear so you see at a glance which thread you want. I use bobbin keepers to hold my bobbins. These look like soft plastic doughnut rings. You can fit many bobbins in them and put them in a drawer where they stay tidy.
