What do you do to maximize the space in your house? What tips would you share for storage for everyday items?

We do a few things.
- For food storage, I realized that, years ago, canned goods (even quart sized cans) will often fit behind books on a book shelf. The books are just closer to the edge, and it's not noticable at all. It wouldn't work for #10 cans, but I've added more "pantry space" this way with all sizes of smaller cans.
- We use the walls. DH, DS2 and I all have a variety of stringed instruments, and we use wall hangers. It looks nice, they're safe, and they take up WAY less space than traditional instrument stands.
- In the little closet-office where I work, I had DH put up shelving up high (higher than my head). I have a traditional book shelf, but things I only use in that room but not daily go up high.
- I had him use the white, plastic covered wire shelves. I can hang things I need handy or affix with magnets (small stuff, obviously)
- Liesa Card, who wrote the book I Dare You To Eat It has some excellent and creative suggestions for storage "in plain sight." While it's geared toward food storage, it would work for a lot of things.
The only caution I have about storage is to PAY ATTENTION to it. A few months ago, I sold a bunch of stuff and donated the rest. There was nothing wrong with any of it, and we were "storing" in case we needed it. But I came to the conclusion that it could have been of use to someone else, and we could use that space for things we will definitely use. Space is ALSO a resource that we need to be good stewards of!

We live in a tiny house. REALLY tiny, smaller than the condo where we used to live in California. I had tons of storage there, the whole hallway was floor to ceiling cupboards. One thing that I am blessed with here is a back room that was added on specifically for storage, but still not roomy. One thing that is important is rotating our clothes by season, because our closet is one of those old fashioned jobs that goes to both bedrooms, so space is very limited. We have a cat and those litter pails with a handle is our friend. After they are empty, I use them for storing everything, clothing, food, you name it. Even our tools are in one. They are stackable which is great. I have a bed with a frame with drawers in it where I store our bed linens and seasonal décor. Our coffee table is an old fashioned steamer trunk where I store all our Christmas decorations. I bought a bakers rack off Amazon where I store all my appliances as my counter space is quite limited. I will add more as I think of it.

I de-cluttered a few things today to give to Goodwill. It's amazing how getting rid of a box or two of "stuff" makes things seem roomier!

The previous owners of our house built storage under the basement stairs. We also go through our clothes seasonally to make sure that everything is something that we wear. But the biggest thing is being conscious of bringing more stuff in.

I got some of those sticky wall hooks to use for the kitchen. They are great for hanging items like keys or pot holders and that helps keep the counters clear.
