I do. It's fantastic, when the circumstances are right.
First of all - in Texas, you're going to need some sort of rig to keep it from blowing over. It WILL blow around (and what a mess... ask me how I know LOL). Those reflectors are like sails. The "rig" isn't complicated. It's basically a 2x4 with a hole drilled through it. I got the information online and DH made it in just a couple minutes.
The only downside I've found is that it hasn't worked well for me outside of Texas. It does best with a direct line of sun in a clear sky. Even a little bit of haze (not even cloud cover) impacts the heating. Remember, it heats from light (which is then absorbed by the black interior/cooking pans and trapped by the glass cover). We have too many partly cloudy days here. We also have so many trees that when we do have a truly clear sky day, I have to keep shifting the oven to keep it out of the (moving) shade.
There is a learning curve, but I really love (loved) using mine. Baking in it is great, and certain high-attention-at-the-stove items (ike polenta) are a snap in the sun oven. I've hung onto it in case we move somewhere where it'll be useful more often.

Interesting you should mention this! We're thinking of making a solar oven as a summer project. We even saved a certain size cardboard box to use. I've been busy with other things, but I do want to do it sometime next month!

After a month of very intense sun I finally realized I could be using the heat to cook with! I donβt have a solar oven but could make one easily. I have the pot from a slow cooker that is no longer working. The pot is black with a glass lid so why not use it.

Thanks ladies. We get so much sun here. Most of my yard gets full sun all day. First yard I have had with that much sun. I just wonder if my dog would be to curious. Lol.

I fogot about the critters! If I set up a sun oven I'd probably have all the neighborhood coyotes, hawks, raccoons, dogs, and cats checking it out! LOL!

Maybe put the oven up high like maybe the roof of the car? Lol Secure the pot lid with a bungie cord?

One of the places I used it we had a LOT of critter activity (coyotes, raccoon, even saw a wild cat once), even though it was a well populated neighborhood. I never had a wild animal mess with it. It's not as if you're leaving it alone for that long. If you are cooking for a long time, you'll probably need to adjust the angle to the sun.
I don't know about a homemade one, but a wild critter could NOT open the lid on my Sun Oven when it's fastened. It's TIGHT.
I would think your own dog would be the one you'd need to keep an eye on, since she's comfortable with you, she'll already be in your "space" and will be comfortable with your things... and anything that smells like chicken cooking is interesting, right?
