Gift giving challenges. Here are the ones I run into: - older family/friends who no longer want THINGS. I've been sending food or coffee (well received, but I'd like to keep things interesting). One friend likes charitable donations, so that's an option for her
- Children (in extended family) who ONLY are interested in popular media characters (from video games or YouTube channels).
- People just already buy themselves whatever they need or want.
- People either don't like handmade items or value them but don't want them.
Is it just me? What do you do? A small confession: I figure my sister's kids probably hated last year's Christmas gifts. The truth is, I was really unnerved by that storm in Texas the previous winter (the crazy one where people lost power all over). They had no power - and no water - for over a week. My sister said they tried going to a hotel during that time, but the hotels were in the same situation. They each got handmade sweaters or a poncho and accessories (a hat or arm warmers). I was so worried it might happen again, I risked sending a hated gift in order to know they'd have at least one thing to keep them warm(er) if needed.

When in doubt, I'll get a gift card to a local restaurant. I try to help home-based artisans or local business as much as possible, so I'll get gift certificates or gift cards there and let the recipient order what they want.
