Ladies, I came across a couple of charity opportunities to share: - Emily's Hats for Hope. I have donated to Emily's previously. (As a teen, Emily became enamored with hoop knitting and hats, donating them to the homeless. Her project grew into a HUGE endeavor, with tons of donations of yarn - which they redistribute - and completed items). In the past, I have donated hats. (It was odd to send them hundreds of miles away, but the local charities would not accept the items I had made because they weren't identical. Emily's will accept any and all hats, scarves, etc.) Emily's is expecting a large need in November, when they are expecting a big need. Emilys will collect items, and turn them over to MEND who will distribute them. Read the announcement from Emily's here (Facebook post). Read about MEND here.
- Bridgette's Cradles. This one's a heartbreaker, but I think it's important. This organization collects hand crocheted or hand knitted "cradles" for tiny preemie babies who cannot/did not survive birth. Parents can hold their baby in the cradle and babies can be buried in them. This charity is more strict than Emily's: 1. You must apply (I think they just are keeping records - I don't get the impression there are disqualifyin issues). 2. You must use their pattern and the types of yarn they specify. 3. You ship the stitched product to their main office, where they are finished with lace.
"Charity begins at home," but when you have time and yarn but no local need, we can look elsewhere.

Great info there! Thanks for sharing! I know there are charities that accept little burial pouches for preemies (sewn ones), but I did not know about a charity that accepts crochet ones.

We've decided that alterations are much more profitable for me than doing the craft fairs, so we're going to quit the fairs and just do alterations and special orders. So, to get rid of my big fabric stash, this coming year I'm going to sew items for Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child. They can use all sorts of stuff, especially cloth menstrual pads, tote bags, string backpacks, pencil pouches, stuffed animals, etc. I figure I can get a lot done during the slower winter months before the spring prom/bridal season hits.
