I always watch food prices, but yesterday was really stunning.
I've shared we usually stop at two grocery stores each week: Publix, for loss leaders and things we can only pick up there (like Zevia); and Trader Joe's (for a few items DH strongly prefers and because most of their prices are lower).
Yesterday, I looked at all the eggs in Publix. They are always priced higher than TJ's. Eggs - plain, normal large eggs, were over $5 a dozen. Not brown eggs or organic eggs or free range eggs. I looked for the medium sized eggs to compare - they were $4.50/dozen.
Now, I'd been a little frustrated because large eggs at TJ's have been holding steady at $1.25 (they used to be less). Well, yesterday, the exact same dozen eggs at TJs were $3.49. Have the chickens gone on strike?!
Our overall cost at TJ's surprised me, too, but that's probably a different post.

Prices for eggs are up here too. I’ve heard from some that it’s because of the bird flu. Many chickens had to be slaughtered. I’ve had no issue ordering chicks from the hatchery though (about 7 months ago). It’s been about 2 yrs ago I finally went up on my egg prices to $3 dozen and people tell me how cheap that is compared to the stores.

If I remember correctly, one of the targeted fires of food facilities was at a poultry facility.

I got eggs over the weekend and they were $4 a dozen. That really stings! The store had no fresh chicken at all, very little beef, and it did not look good. I tried to buy some frozen chicken in a package, only to realize the bag was mostly air and very little chicken for a big price. Romaine lettuce was $8!!!
I still order produce from Misfits Market and lately it has been priced cheaper than our local stores'. Even with the added shipping charges, I can save money on gas if I order enough produce. The issue is getting it to last longer than a few days.

Rebekah, is there an Aldi near you? Starting today (or was it last Tuesday?) until next month they’re rolling back their prices to what they were in 2019. I’m going tomorrow.

I heard about the rollback but didn't know when they would do it. There's a store about 45 minutes away. Might be time to make another trip soon!

Eggs are going up here, too. My son has a friend at school who raises chickens. Every Sunday she delivers eggs for $5 a dozen. I've been buying from her because it's almost as much as the store and I'd rather support someone local as much as possible. You have to admire a high school kid doing this. I figure with the eggs AND delivery to my door, it's a good deal.

Costco had 5 dox. eggs for $11.99 (2.40/doz). They were limiting people to two boxes. We only got one because we've found a few broken inside a sealed box in the past. But at the current prices, it was still a bargain even if we lose one or two eggs.
