Sometimes I watch a youtube channel called Appalachia's Homestead with Patara. She was talking about how during the great depression, people didn't have "pinterest perfect" homes. Instead, homes were based on function and using what one had.
This hit me yesterday. Dh and dd1 went to a rummage sale and came home with 5 used dinner plates. The plates were pretty and still had plenty of use left in them, but I wasn't enthusiastic because they didn't match my other plates. They were a style popular back in the 1990's. Dd1 pointed out that pink is my favorite color and I had mentioned needing more plates as we've broken several over the years. I thought about what Patara said and realized I should be thankful to have pretty, useful, almost free plates even if they look "outdated."
Right now with the economy the way it is, my focus should be on frugality and having food instead of having perfect plates to serve that food.
What about your home is more functional than "pinterest perfect?"

Not even close, and never will be.
At one time I wished it was. Now? Not so much. We have odds and ends collected from thrift stores, yard sales, and family. I'm okay with that now.

I don't aspire to anything like Pinterest Perfection, but it is nice to see our house becoming more of a place that is "ours."
This is something that's become increasingly difficult for me over the years because of how much we've moved. it's very, very hard for me to invest myself into a house. For example, this house could use some new window treatments. At various places, I've made custom window treatments (some I sewed, some I crocheted). But just since we oroginally came to Alabama in 2014, we've moved five times, and the first four moves took place within the first five years. Last month marked five years in this house (the longest we've lived anywhere). I'm sure that marker was a bit of a symbol for me, and why I was willing to move forward with new flooring. It's nice to think we'd stay here, but there are things on the horizon that I know will mean a big change for us (again). I'm hoping it won't mean a big move, but we shall see.
In the mean time - we're using "eclectic" place settings as well, and most of time time, we either drink out of souvenir cups or insulated lidded cups. At least our flatware matches... mostly. 😉 (There are a few pieces in there that don't match, but I wanted extra iced tea spoon and salad/serving forks and spoons).

I have never been Pinterest Perfect. Latest trends don’t interest me nor does things have to be matching or super nice. We’ve been in this house for 15 years yet I don’t have curtains or any matching dishes. As long as it’s functional and practical then I’m happy.

I just can't get into pinterest. I try but it just doesn't hold my interest. I have lots of dishes. At last count i had5 set of dinnerware, a coffee set (it was MY mothers) and a breakfast set and luncheon set. Most belonged to family. I have his mother, his grandmothers, and my sisters. 1 set I collect because my mother collected them and I remember them. 1 set i fell in love with . 1 set Sue Ellen gave me. Then we have the basic white correlle everyday dishes I can add to at will. My goal is sets of 12, I am nearly there on all my sets but the milk glass sets and the 1 Sue Ellen gave me.
Other than the correlle I get them 2nd hand. Most of my platters do not match my dishes.
I buy beach towels at the end of summer and use somne as regular towels and so on. I favor funtion over form.
If I can enjoy and live in my space, why should I worry if it isn't ___ style? The 1 thing i do battle often is clutter. I am really working to keep the front dining table (It will be part of the kitchen eventually) clear. It is a catch all. I keep it and the big dining table clear.
I do not follow the if you haven't worn it in 6 months get rid of it thing. I need my winter coat once a year if that, I won't get rid of it.
My boys are fully behind me keeping my things and are not in the we don't want to deal with it when you die camp. We know a great estate sale company so they aren't worried about that!
