When I was growing up it was the living room. Some people had family rooms. Our actual living room, the one the house called it, is my office. The room with the TV in it is at the back of the house and has our main dining table, as well as the TV in it. I alternately call it the living room, because we do most of our living there, the family room, because the family gathers there and the game room, because we play all our games there. We have a "formal" dining room too but it houses the freezer, pantry, china and a Barbie House... As well as a dining table and chairs.

It's the living room at our house. We have an open floor plan with the kitchen, dining and living room all open to each other. When we built this house we had 3 littles with one on the way and I wanted to be able to see them all while I was in the kitchen!

In our house, it's the "TV" room.
When I was growing up, at first, it was the "living room." When my parents moved to a house with two living rooms (they actually needed the bedrooms and it was the only house they could afford LOL), the room with the TV was the "family room" and the piano went in the living room. (In our previous home, the piano was stuck in a hallway).
This house has multiple small "living" rooms. One has our piano and a loveseat (the "piano" room). One has the TV and is jammed with seating for the five of us (the "TV" room). ONe has DH's work desk and a loooonnngg table with computers and a printer where the boys do school (the "computer" room).

Growing up in Australia, we called it the "lounge" or "lounge room".
At our current house, we call it the Family Room. Our house also has a narrow room at the front that connects to the dining room (like an L shape) which original house plans called the Living Room but we just call it the "front room" (it has a book case, my desk, and shelves with the things we sell online in it). Our family room has our sofa, TV, most of the children's toys, and a craft table we do our school work and crafts at.

I guess this must be a New England thing but to me it’s the “parlor” If you were blessed enough to have two such rooms one was the parlor and one was the living room where one did their “living”!
