We had a terrific thunderstorm last night that downed trees and took out power in the area. Fortunately our power is still on. I always try to have candles or a flashlight ready just in case, and a few jugs of water. My gas tank is full and I try to keep the cell phone charged. I do need to get more pre-packaged type food that does not require cooking.
What do you do to prep for storms?

We actually do a lot, since both DH and I work from home. If I have to cancel, I don't earn, and sometimes I have to pay a fee. - We have an inverter for our truck so we can use it like a generator.
- We keep some rechargeable lights on hand. I've started switching our lightbulbs over to ones with built in batteries that charge while they're being used normally.
- We have power backups for our internet and computers, but this is really just to give us time to save and shut down.
- We have a data plan on my phone that will let me work for a long time (DH not so much, he uses too much data!
- I got a bigger battery back up that is good for charging laptops and phones. We can also run the modem from it. Ironically, we often do not lost our internet when we lose power. So if we can power the modem, we can still be online!
- Finally, we broke down last time and got a generator. We actually live in a housing development, but quickly learned that power outages are an issue here and virtually everyone has a generator. (We live in a wooded area, and when trees go down... so does the electricity). We had an old generator that DH was tinkering with, but the last bad outage was long enough we grew concerned about the food in the freezers and fridge. I woudn't recommend this for everyone, but outages happen here often enough that, in combination with us working online, we knew it would be worth it.
- We can cook on the grill (gas), and I have a rocket stove also. It does take a LONG time to make coffee on that grill, though LOL

We have a generator. We are on county water so don't need to worry about a well pump going out if power goes out. But our county water is off wells so it would be handy to keep jugs of water on hand. Our stove is gas plus we have the wood stove.
