Gracious. The prices right now.
So, strategies?
I keep a stocked pantry, so I can cook from that as needed. The trick is figuring out how and when to replace what I'm using.
This week, we spent at least double what we normally do on our weekly runs. Some of that I was sure were smart expenditures. We hit the store at the right time to get marked down meats. I took ALL of the packages of stewing beef, we got one package of marked down steaks for some future treat meal, and I got a package of Italian sausage. I had a really hard time deciding about a ham. They had a whole ham, bone in, marked down to $1.49/lb. I ended up deciding not to get it. I just got a bone in, spiral sliced ham the previous week, for fifty cents more a pound.
I'm really focused on restocking with marked down items. The boys have gotten much better lately about eating leftover. It seems to be an out of sight, out of mind issue. So, I've been taking them out of the fridge on Monday mornings, setting them on the counter, and saying, "EAT THESE before making anything else," and they have been.

I've been looking into buying local as much as possible for meat, eggs, and other things. If I have to pay extra for groceries, at least I can try to keep that money in my community. I've also been saving seeds from my Misfits veggies. So far we have bell pepper and squash seeds and we'll start those indoors and move to the outside later. I'm going to try to grow lettuce indoors to keep the deer away from it.
Our grocery has a section for reduced products, which we always check. Lately, the "reduced" price is simply the regular price from a few months ago!
I'm keeping a gallon zip bag in the freezer for odds and ends to use as stock. This goes along with my "reduce, re-use, recycle" mindset for this year.

I've been keeping an eye on different items and rising prices. Tea is really going up in price. I used to get 100 bags of black tea for $1.00 and now it's more than double that. It's also getting more scarce around here. The store where I usually buy it was sold out, so I sent dh to another store to stock up on a few extra boxes. Lately, when something sells out, the next batch to hit the shelves is much higher in price!
Also, dh found pork loin for $1.49 a pound! That's a great price in my area. Lots of farmers are selling off their animals for slaughter since they cannot afford to feed them this winter, so meat prices should go down for a short time. It's a good time to buy some extra for the freezer.
Since I do the KETO diet, we use lots of produce. Lately, it only lasts a couple of days at most. I love getting Misfits, but have to be careful to use produce right away. I needed a couple of cucumbers the other day and had to rummage through the entire stock at the store before I found a cucumber that wasn't mushy! The zucchini looked a little old, but was in a package. When I got home I immediately removed it from the package and found it was completely molded and rotten. It wasn't worth the gas to drive back to the store for a refund.
